Tips For Installing A Custom Stair Runner

Posted by Payless Rugs on Apr 21st 2023

Depending on the style, a custom stair runner can add elegance or an air of casualness to your home. No matter what type of runner you choose, it will help spruce up your style by drawing the eye to a focal point and create a cozy feel on otherwise hard stairs. They also help to protect your staircase from heavy foot traffic and prevent slipping and falling.  To get the most out of your custom stair runner, it needs to be installed properly. If not, it will add a hazard rather than making your stairs safer! The best part about installing your custom stair runner is that you won't need too many tools. We'll walk you through it.

Gather What You Need

It's essential to be organized when starting any home project, including your stair runner installation. First, you must gather all the tools and supplies needed. These include:

  • The runner
  •  A measuring tape
  •  Carpet padding
  •  Carpet tape
  •  A good pair of scissors
  •  Painter's tape
  •  A bolster chisel
  •  Staple gun
  •  A pencil

Take Measurements & Add Padding

You'll need to measure your stairs, including the riser. Mark the center of the stairs so that the runner lines up perfectly. Once you have the math done, you can add your carpet padding. Each stair tread will need a separate rug pad.

Be sure to use several pieces of carpet tape under the padding. You will want to cut your carpet padding so that it is more narrow than your runner by about an inch or more. Now, line up the top edge of the rug pad against the back of the tread.
Be sure to measure it to be sure that it is perfectly straight. You can use a pencil to mark the area you want to place the padding. You'll need to pull the padding taut when you secure it with your staple gun in several areas. You can also use a strong adhesive tape.

Smooth & Secure The Stair Runner

Once the padding is secure, smooth the runner over each tread. You can use your bolster chisel to press the carpet firmly in place. You'll need your staple gun again to secure the rug about every three inches. Be sure to get underneath the nose on each stair until you've finished. You can add stair rods to make your staircase look more stylish.
